Mondo's volunteers in Uganda: Project II

Lisaks Bluesky koolile on minu vabatahtliku teenistuse osaks ka teine projekt, mille peamiseks eesmärgiks on avada Kampalas väike pood (+ käsitöökeskus). Seeläbi on võimalik pakkuda töötamisvõimalusi füüsilise puudega noortele ning näidata avalikkusele, et puuetega inimesed on võimelised töötama ja aktiivselt ühiskonnaelus osalema. Ettevõtmisega tegelevad viis noort aktiivset naist, kes on lõpetanud Kampalas asuva liikumispuudega õpilastele suunatud kooli (Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped). Nende naiste sooviks on avada pood, kus müüa enda valmistatud riideid ja käsitöötooteid ning ühtlasi pakkuda mitmekülgset õmblusteenust. Õmblemisega on nad tegelenud juba pikemat aega ning on selles väga osavad, kuid liikumisraskuste tõttu on oma ettevõttega alustamine paljuski raskendatud.

Üks lihtne näide – Kampalas ratastooliga ühest linnaosast teise saamiseks on vaja kasutada kaht boda-bodat, üks reisija ja teine ratastooli jaoks ning see tähendab ka topelttasu.

Piiratud liikumisvõime tõttu on uue poe ruumidele seatud ka mitmed nõuded, millest peamiseks on ligipääs ratastooliga nii poeruumidele kui tualetile. Praegu käib usin ruumide otsimine ning samal ajal valmistavad naised erinevaid riidest tooteid, mida poes müüa. Hoiame pöialt, et peagi on poel oma pesa olemas!

Eestis saab samade tublide naiste tekstiilitooteid hankida MTÜ Mondo kaudu ning kui kellelgi tekib pilte nähes kohe tunne, et midagi meeldib või huvitab, siis kirjutage julgelt kadi.epler[at]gmail.com Peamised tooted siiani: erinevad kotid (sülearvutile, kosmeetikakotid, kandekotid), köögitarbed (pajakindad, põlled jne), igasugused riided.

The second project that I am working with aims to open a small tailoring shop and crafts production center in Kampala. The goal of setting up a shop/crafts production centre is to employ persons with physical handicap; and to demonstrate to broader public that persons with special needs are able to work and participate in the society. The people behind the idea are five young and active women who have all graduated from the Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped. They wish to open up a shop for selling the clothes and crafts they produce and also offer customized tailoring services. Tailoring and dress-making has been their skill and passion for already a longer period (and the women are really good at it!) but the difficulties of moving around in Kampala are a great obstacle when trying to open up an independent business.

One simple example: if one wants to go to another part of town with a wheelchair, then you need to boda-bodas for that, one for the passenger and one for the wheelchair and this of course means double transportation costs.

Accessibility is an important topic and criterion when looking for suitable rooms for the shop. The shop itself and the toilets have to be accessible with a wheelchair. Currently we are actively looking for a good place for the shop and at the same time the women are sewing products for the shop. Fingers crossed that the perfect location and rooms will be found soon!
